It was on a weekend away with her family in Albury, NSW that Race Party director Noirin Mosley first discovered the appeal of slot car racing.
She was taking a stroll down central Dean St and doing some shopping when her two boys quietly snuck off. Ms Mosley later found them at Revhead Slot Cars completely engrossed in a game of slot car racing.
“I was surprised to see the race track surrounded by a group of slot car enthusiasts, alongside my two boys, who were all playing together, laughing, giving each other high-fives and generally having a good time. It was also the first time I saw my boys so engaged in an activity other than a computer or video game,” she said.
When Ms Mosley returned to Melbourne, she tried looking for a slot car racing venue but there wasn’t anything available.
And that’s when she had a lightbulb moment – to create her own slot car racing venue for people to enjoy.
“I thought slot car racing was such a perfect combination of technology and an environment where people could enjoy a team game and interact in real-time,” Ms Mosley said.
“I had a vision for a venue that was clean, open and vibrant – a place that could host birthday parties, special occasions, corporate events and more. Thus, Race Party was born.”
Ms Mosley was attracted to the dynamic of slot car racing because it was fast-paced and encouraged healthy competition. If players crash in the game, their car comes off the track. There’s no resetting the game and starting over, a marshal has to place the car back on the track.
“And that is the beauty of slot car racing – there are no guaranteed wins,” she said.
Ms Mosley said slot car racing grabbed her attention after she saw the reaction of her two boys play. And, after giving the game a shot herself, she realised how accessible slot car racing was to people of any age. She wanted to offer that same excitement to other children, families and adults.
Ms Mosley chose Camberwell as the location for Race Party because it wasn’t too far from the city, it was close to schools, and lots of young families lived in or near the area. She also wanted Race Party to be in a convenient location for parents and visitors. With plenty of parking nearby, as well as shopping, coffee and eating options around for parents to enjoy while their children enjoyed a game of slot car racing, Camberwell provided the ideal venue.
Ms Mosley said the appeal of slot car racing was the fact that it did not require prior skills or experience to play the game.
“We’ve had everyone from young children to teenagers, adults and corporate teams try their hand at slot car racing. We’ve even hosted a 70th birthday at Race Party,” she said.
“I really encourage everyone to give slot car racing a go – you’ll be surprised at how much fun there is to be had.”
