The excitement of Christmas and New Year has come and gone, the toys have been played with and friends are off on family holidays. The battle of school holiday boredom has begun! But this year with added cloud of travel restrictions and daily testing news flashes, the challenge to find fun and entertaining activities for the kids is on. Race Party have some suggestions on what you and your family can do to create a memorable holiday period.
1. Create your own restaurant at home -
Rather than creating a whole new activity, why not take an activity we all do everyday and make it fun! Turn your home into your very own restaurant. From planning menus and buying supplies, to creating and serving dishes, right through to clean up the whole family can get involved in turning your kitchen into a first class dining experience. With the ability to tailor age specific jobs for all family members, how far you take this is limited only by your imagination.
2. Go Geocaching -
What’s geocaching? Geocaching is an outdoor activity that takes place all over the world. Using a gps or smart phone, geocaching is a worldwide scavenger hunt that has participants search for different containers or ‘caches’ using coordinates and clues. Geocaching is a great activity for parents and kids to do together, but be warned - once you start you may find that it is highly addictive!
3. Pretend holiday -
Missing your overseas holiday? Why not recreate the experience from the comfort of home? Just because you missed your trip overseas doesn’t mean you can’t get there virtually. Immerse yourselves in the cuisine, music and movies of your destination and even try your hand at learning the local language! It may not be the same but it can still be great fun.
4. Garage sale -
January is a great time to get all of the surplus items no longer needed in your house and turn them in to some spending money. With new Christmas presents still in high rotation, take the old toys and turn them into cash. The kids will love to get involved and help man the sale.
An alternative to a sale is to donate no longer required but still decent toys and belongings to goodwill. It is a great opportunity for kids to learn the lesson of ‘paying it forward’.
5. Holiday Olympics -
The Olympics have been moved to July 2021, but you can create your own games at home. Family members can represent their favourite countries, and you can compete in all manner of sports games and puzzles. Use everyday items around the house and go for the gold! Really get into it with your own lighting of the flame, and medal ceremonies with national anthems!
6. Balloon tennis -
With the Australian Open pushed back to February, there is an opening in the January tennis schedule. Balloon tennis is the answer! Two paper plates, one balloon and away you go. Other fun options include totem tennis and table tennis.
7. Make a time capsule -
Capture a moment in time and seal it in a box. A time capsule is a great way for kids to express themselves now, and something to look back on in years to come. Whether it is something to be buried for others to find, or something to keep for when they are older, a time capsule is a great way for kids to record their own lives in their own words.
8. Backyard camping -
The trip away may be on hold but that doesn’t rule out pitching a tent in your backyard and snuggling in to a sleeping bag. While keeping the luxury of the nearby toilet, try to keep everything else just as a normal camping trip would be. Board games, first aid kits and mosquito repellant is a must, phones tablets and other electronic items are a no.
9. Start a veggie garden -
If you have some spare space in your back (or front) garden, a veggie garden is a great activity that kids love. From the original set up and choosing of what will go in it, the daily maintenance and watering, to the rewarding moment of harvesting their hard work, a backyard veggie garden will be an activity that will continue to provide memorable moments for the whole family.
If you don’t have space for a veggie garden, try a day out with the family going strawberry picking, fun and delicious!
10. Get together with your friends online -
For an entertaining and exciting way to catch up with friends from all over the globe, a Race Party online session is a fully hosted hour of games and quizzes that will test your skill and knowledge.
